A comfortable night outdoors depends on a system, not one piece of equipment. The hammock supports you, the suspension connects it safely to suitable trees, the tarp manages rain and wind, and insulation below and above you limits heat loss. What counts as “complete” therefore depends on the trip.
Begin with the hammock and suspension
The Momo Jord Hammock Kit builder begins with the hammock. The current Momo Jord Hammock is 350 cm long and 140 cm wide. It weighs 1,090 g with its supplied equipment and has a stated maximum load of 200 kg. The integrated mosquito net can be stowed when it is not needed. Two 2.8 m daisy-chain tree straps and carabiners are included.
The asymmetric shape is designed for a diagonal lay. That usually feels flatter than lying directly from end to end, but comfort still depends on your body, your preferred position and the setup. Start with the supplied arrangement and make small adjustments. The hang-force calculator shows why pulling the suspension unusually tight increases the load on the anchors.
Choose protection for the site and forecast
Insects
The integrated mosquito net covers this part of the system. In seasons and places without troublesome insects, it can be put away.
Rain and wind
A tarp is your roof. Choose its coverage for the forecast, how exposed the site is and how much margin you need. The asymmetrical Momo Jord tarp is 360 cm along the ridgeline and 310 cm corner to corner. A more sheltered pitch may be suitable in settled weather; an exposed site or uncertain forecast calls for more conservative protection. Check an official local forecast and use Hammock Weather as an additional planning aid, not as a safety guarantee.
Insulate both sides of your body
A sleeping bag is compressed underneath you in a hammock, so it contributes much less insulation on the underside than it does above you. An underquilt hangs outside the hammock and can retain its loft. It should sit close to the hammock without being pulled so tightly that the insulation is compressed.
Choose bottom insulation for the expected overnight low, wind exposure, your own cold tolerance and the margin appropriate to the trip. Momo Jord’s figures are field-based guidance rather than standardized laboratory ratings. The underquilt calculator makes this planning model visible.
You also need suitable insulation above you: a sleeping bag or top quilt appropriate to the conditions. Warmth below cannot compensate for inadequate insulation above, and vice versa. If you already own a suitable sleeping bag, you can build the rest of the system around it.
Use the kit builder as a live checklist
The builder shows the components, current prices and availability. It is more reliable than an old packing list because products and stock can change. Work through the decisions in this order:
- Choose the hammock and inspect the supplied suspension before leaving.
- Plan a low, hazard-free hang between sound trees where hammocks are permitted.
- Add rain and wind protection for the actual site and forecast.
- Choose insulation below and above for the expected overnight conditions.
- Add accessories only when they solve a specific need.
Three practical starting points
Mild, settled summer weather: hammock, suspension, insect protection where needed and top insulation appropriate to the night. Carry a tarp whenever the forecast or route leaves too little margin to go without one.
Changeable three-season weather: add a tarp and select an underquilt using the overnight low and exposure, not the daytime high. Recheck the forecast before departure.
Cold, windy or remote conditions: increase the margin, test the complete setup near home first and carry a fallback plan. A calculator cannot assess your health, experience, exact site or sudden weather changes.
Before the first night
Practice pitching every component, check straps, stitching and carabiners, and make sure no part rubs against a sharp edge. Do not hang over water, rocks, steep ground or other hazards. The Hammock School collects the setup guides and planning tools.
When you are ready, configure the Hammock Kit or begin with the hammock, underquilt and asymmetrical tarp.
